Post-Stroke Care at Home
A stroke is a "brain attack". It can happen to anyone at any time. It occurs when blood flow to an area of the brain is cut off. When this happens, brain cells are deprived of oxygen and begin to die. When brain cells die during a stroke, the functions controlled by that area of the brain, such as memory and muscle control, are lost.
The most common symptoms of a stroke are:
- Weakness or numbness of the face, arm, or leg on one side of the body
- Loss of vision or dimming (like a curtain falling) in one or both eyes
- Loss of speech, difficulty talking or understanding what others are saying
- Sudden, severe headache with no known cause
- Loss of balance or unstable walking, usually combined with another symptom
At Care at Home, given our experience in dealing with innumerable patients at our hospitals, we have devised a comprehensive program.

BENEFITS OF CARE AT HOME FOR STROKE CLIENTS
- Avoid loneliness and inactivity that may result in post-stroke depression: Our multidisciplinary team is trained to respond to the needs of the patient. They provide physical, emotional and psychological support and help patients avoid a debilitating sense of isolation.
- Supervision during home rehabilitation: Rehabilitation professionals agree that the most important key to successful recovery is carefully directed, well-focused repetitive practice. Many patients are given a set of exercises to perform at home. Our at-home team provides reminders, encouragement, support and supervision to help the patient stick with the program.
- Assistance with activities of daily living: At-home caregivers help clients with bathing, grooming, dressing, using the toilet and other personal care activities that they are unable to do by themselves. Trained caregivers are careful to preserve the dignity of clients at this challenging time.
- Staff help patients keep track of appointments to the hospital, doctor's office and other meetings. This reduces anxiety and allows patients to focus on their recovery.
- Mental health counselling to help the patient cope with emotional and behaviour changes that sometimes occur after a stroke can be given by home care staff in the presence of family members.
- Specialised physiotherapy sessions are conducted to help restore physical functioning and treat problems with movement, balance and coordination.
